Boston African American National Historic Site
Begin at the Boston Common Visitor Center to visit The Boston African American National Historic Sites along the Black Heritage Trail. The first site is the Shaw Memorial, across from the State House. Explore the rich history of Beacon Hill's 19th century Black community.

The National Park Service offers free guided tours of the Black Heritage Trail, Monday through Saturday at 10am, 12 noon, and 2pm with 24 hour advance notice. Tours can accommodate up to 30 people each time.

A Black Heritage Trail site and a National Historic Landmark, The Meeting House is the oldest extant black church building in the United States built by free African American artisans. The African Meeting House (1806) and Abiel Smith School (1835) on Beacon Hill, are gems in the Museum of Afro-American History's collection of historic sites.
